Overview

General Summary:

The Safety Specialist will be responsible for collaborating with operations, contractor recruiting, contractor relations, sales, and the safety teams to provide expertise, leadership, and support regarding the development and implementation of operational safety policies, procedures, standards, and requirements. The Safety Specialist must promote a professional image and demonstrate the ability to build trust, confidence, and influence change. This role is required to possess excellent safety program, relevant safety, and DOT/FMCSA knowledge and be able to demonstrate this expertise when interacting with independent contractors and operations teams.

 

Responsibilities

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Provide expertise, leadership, and support regarding the development and implementation of operational safety policies, procedures, standards, and requirements to ensure compliance with all applicable laws, regulations, and safety requirements.
  • Instruct, coach, and mentor operations teams regarding company safety policies, applicable laws, regulations, and safety requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with all federal regulations and Panther policies.
  • Provide analysis and feedback regarding adverse trends and non-compliance with company, local, state, and federal government procedures and make recommendations for immediate compliance.
  • Responsible for ensuring all required safety and regulatory training is current and completed as required.
  • Ensure all commodities on Panther vehicles are compatible with safety, Panther insurance requirements, and state and federal regulations.
  • Interact with other departments, customers, and corporate support staff in dispute resolution and interpretation of policies and regulations.
  • Serve as the direct contact for safety issues and questions for independent contractors.
  • Identify best practices and incorporate these best practices into our standards to continuously improve company safety policies.
  • Represent Panther with government and law enforcement agencies to promote the company’s positive and responsible public safety image in a professional manner.
  • Assess and identify risks to Panther, our customers, independent contractors, and the public.
  • Maintain confidentiality of legal, safety, and proprietary information.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Required Education, Experience, Certification, Licenses, Registration:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required
  • Safety related degree or certification preferred
  • Previous Specialist experience a plus
  • 5 years of experience with DOT and FMCSA regulations or related safety experience in commercial motor vehicle management.

 

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products, including Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
  • Ability to obtain secret level clearance from the Department of Defense
  • Well-rounded general knowledge of transportation, insurance, and a working knowledge of safety regulations.
  • Working knowledge of hazardous material placards, packaging, and segregation.
  • Working knowledge of FMCSA 49 CFR regulations.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills to send clear, concise, and consistent messages.
  • Strong analytical skills with demonstrated problem solving ability.
  • Ability to make independent judgments and use discretion in applying safety regulations appropriately.
  • Ability to develop and implement department goals and strategies based on broader organization goals.
  • Ability to determine appropriate course of action to maintain customer satisfaction.
